Welcome Back and Some Important Information September 2015

September 3, 2015

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Ar son foireann na scoile, ba mhaith liom Céad Míle Fáilte a chur roimh gach éinne agus sinn ag teacht ar ais tar éis an tsamhraidh. Ag tús na bliana seo, ba mhaith liom fáilte speisialta a chur roimh na Naoináin Shóisearacha agus na daltaí nua ar fud na scoile.

On behalf of all in St. Nessan’s, I would like to welcome everyone back for the new school year. A very special word of welcome to our new Junior Infants who started their primary school years this week and to the other children who have entered into other classes throughout the school. I hope your time here will be happy and fruitful.

A new school year can be daunting for some pupils and parents alike. A new year brings new challenges and opportunities. Your children have moved on to new classes, new classrooms and new teachers. I would like to assure you that all members of staff have the best interests of your children at heart and are available to discuss any worries you may have. Please make an appointment to see your child’s teacher if you have any concerns.

As you may have noticed our school warden Dom has moved to the pedestrian crossing just beside the car park exit. This will make crossing the road a lot safer for the large number of children and parents who use this crossing in the mornings and afternoons. This also means that children and parents using the pedestrian crossing nearer Centra will need to be more mindful of traffic coming to and from school as it will be unmanned.

I would request that all parents observe the long standing car park rules that have been drawn up to ensure the safety of all members of the school community. Please drive slowly through the car park, drop off your children at the kerbside and only turn left on exiting the car park being conscious of the pedestrian crossing at the exit. There is no parking available for parents in the car park as spaces are for staff only.

Pupils are bringing home Pupil Profile forms into which you are asked to fill your contact details. Please ensure that the contact numbers are up to date and that there is at least one emergency number which can be used if your own number is not contactable for any reason. Please also ensure that your email address is included as it is the intention to send out notes such as this one by email rather than by paper. This has been tried out late last school year and was well received generally by parents.

School insurance forms have been given to every child. This scheme, underwritten by Allianz, costs €6 or €9 depending on the cover required. Please note that the closing date for receipt of insurance forms is Thursday 17 September. Forms cannot be accepted after that date.

MPCC Credit Union will be resuming their school savings scheme for pupils in 3rd to 6th Classes later this month. We hope to have forms / information packs for those pupils wishing to join the savings scheme in 3rd Class available within the next week or two.

I would like to remind you that you must inform your child’s teacher in writing by the end of September if you wish your child not to participate in classes pertaining to sexuality as part of the Relationships and Sexuality Education Programme The R.S.E. Programme is available to view on the school website, www.stnessans.ie, under ‘Information’ and then ‘School Policies’.

I would also like to remind you that the enrolment process for Junior Infants for 2016 – 2017 will open on Monday 5 October and will close at 1.00 pm on Monday 1 February 2016. Applications can only be accepted between those dates. Please see the Enrolment Policy on the school website for further information.

Notes home to parents and other school news items can be accessed on the school website under the School News tab. The school also operates a Twitter account which is updated fairly regularly with very short snippets of news, information, etc. You can find us at @MungretNS. Why not follow us on your computer or mobile device!

Finally may I wish all members of the school community a happy school year for 2015 – 2016.

Yours sincerely,

Letter Home June 2015

June 26, 2015

Friday, June 26, 2015

Dear Parents / Guardians,

The Summer holidays are almost upon us and another school year draws to a close. I would like to record my sincere thanks to all members of the school community for all that has taken place since September last. Our Junior Infants have completed their first year of ‘big school’ and we look forward to welcoming 90 new children in September. Our Sixth Class pupils are about to end their years in St. Nessan’s and set out on the next stage of their journey through life. We look forward to hearing about the achievements of our past pupils in the years ahead. We have some other pupils who are leaving us for different schools and different countries. We wish you every blessing for your futures at home or abroad.

This year as ever has been an eventful year in sporting and cultural areas. We have entered teams in football, hurling, camogie, soccer, basketball, athletics and cross country running and all these teams have done themselves, their families and their school proud whether in victory or defeat. The school choirs have entertained us in school, at the Limerick Choral Festival, at the lighting of the community Christmas Tree in Mungret and in UL at the Peace Proms. They also helped us celebrate First Communion and Confirmation. We had representation at All Ireland level from our quiz teams and also enjoyed success at local level. Peer Tutoring has given the opportunity for some pupils to help spread the love of reading amongst our younger pupils and our Student Council has played an active part in organization of events and giving their insight into a number of topics throughout the year. Thank you to the children and to the teachers who have given of their free time to help nurture and develop the children’s talents.

We collected old unwanted clothing for ‘Cash for Clobber’ and will be doing so again in the new school year. A number of Colours Days were held and funds were raised for local, national and international causes. I would like to thank you for your generosity on these occasions. The pupils in different classes have experienced robotics, Biz World, upcycling and percussion workshops. Active Schools Week was a huge success and the coaches from the GAA Club worked very well with the children in different classes.

This year saw the formal introduction of Book Rental. A number of schemes had been up and running in classes but this has now been centralised and put on a whole school basis with a fantastic take up of 93%. Thousands of books have been covered, bar-coded and scanned and are now ready for the children for next year. A huge thank you to the teachers and parents who worked so hard for many long hours in organising the scheme.

The Parents’ Association has had a very active year organising a number of school events which had both a fund-raising aspect and a very important social aspect to them. Their year culminated in the recent Summer Fun Day which was a huge success and created a very happy and positive atmosphere on the day and still has people talking! Thank you for your input and I look forward to working with you next year.

I would like to thank all the staff within the school for their hard work, dedication and commitment throughout the year in the holistic development of the children in intellectual, moral, spiritual, social and cultural areas. Rath Dé ar bhúr n-obair. Enjoy the break and come back refreshed at the end of August!

There are many others whose contributions to the school have helped greatly in the overall workings of the school. I would like to thank everyone in the wider community who has contributed to the work of the school this year; the Board of Management, our local clergy, sporting and cultural bodies, the Community Gardaí and the Do This in Memory committee to mention but a few. Apologies for anyone who has been left out and has not been mentioned; your help has also been much appreciated this year.

I would like to remember those members of the school community who have suffered bereavement and illness during the year. You and your loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers.

Finally, my wish for all members of the school community is for a happy and safe summer. On Tuesday next 30 June the Infant classes will finish at 11.45 and all other classes will finish at 12.15. We will see you again on Tuesday 1 September.

Yours sincerely,

Colm Ward,

Principal.

School will reopen as usual on Tuesday 2 June.

First Communion

May 8, 2015

Best wishes to the Second Classes who will make their First Holy Communion tomorrow in Raheen Church. Well done for all your hard work and a huge thank you to Ms. Foley, Ms. Kinsella and Mr. Kinnerk your teachers. The choir will also have a long and busy day tomorrow singing at all three ceremonies and I would like to thank them and the teachers involved in preparing them. Hopefully the sun will shine tomorrow for this special day!

Cash for Clobber / Colours Day

May 8, 2015

I would like to express my sincere thanks to you all for your generosity in our recent appeals for Cash for Clobber and in our Colours Day in aid of the Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund. 260 bags of clobber weighing 1,680 Kg were collected from the school this morning. Thank you to the teachers who organised the collection and to the Student Council for all their help this week and especially this morning.

The Colours Day in aid of Nepal Earthquake Relief has raised €1,258 so far. This is a fantastic response to what has been a huge tragedy for the Nepalese people. Thank you to the teachers who organised the appeal and again to our children and their families for their magnificent response.

Happy Easter

March 26, 2015

On behalf of the whole school staff, I would like to wish a Happy Easter to the whole St. Nessan's School Community. The school will close tomorrow Friday for the Easter Holidays with Infant classes finishing at 11.45 and all other classes finishing at 12.15. The school will reopen on Monday April 13. Tomorrow will also be a no uniform day!

The sixth classes will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation on Thursday 16 April and I would like to wish the boys and girls all the best on this special day and to thank the teachers for all their work with the classes.

Last evening the school celebrated success with a large number of children and their families. In particular we said well done to our Senior Choir who won the Schools' Competition at the Limerick Choral Festival recently, the Cross Country runners who won individual and team medals, the Girls' Under 11 Gaelic footballer team who won the City Championship and the Boys' Under 13 Gaelic Football team who also won the City Championship and are now the holders of the Spillane Cup, the Premier Trophy in Gaelic Football for Primary Schools in Limerick. Well done to all and a huge thank to the teachers whose hard work and dedication made the successes possible. We look forward to the remainder of the year and further successes.I would like also to remember those boys and girls who represented the school in other different areas and whose achievements also deserve to be recognised. Well done to all!

Have a Happy Easter. Cáisc shona daoibh go léir!

March 11, 2015

11 March 2015

Dear Parents / Guardians,

The past few weeks have been very busy times here in St. Nessan’s. The hurling and camogie season has started and the first matches are only a short number of weeks away. I would like to wish all the boys and girls well in their competitions and to thank the teachers who give of their time in training and mentoring the teams. We have had the Food Dudes in full swing and the children have been very open to tasting fresh fruit and vegetables in the different classes. Well done to Mrs. Long and her team of volunteers for ensuring the smooth running of the programme.

The basketball leagues have started and Ms. Hayes has been putting in extra training after school with the boys and girls. Our quiz teams did extremely well in the local Credit Union Quiz but unfortunately did not qualify for the All Ireland finals in Dublin. The choir had a fantastic win in the Limerick Choral Festival winning first prize in the Primary Schools’ Competition, a well deserved victory for the boys and girls and for their director Ms. Marron. The Peace Proms Concert in UL recently saw a large number of children from the school involved. Thank you to all the staff who gave up their Saturday to help with the choir.

The fifth classes have been involved in a series of two day workshops run by Biz World Ireland in which they formed mini-companies, designed, produced, marketed and sold their products in a cross-curricular programme which was both educational and fun!

The second classes celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation (First Penance) in Raheen Church recently. Thank you to the teachers in second class, to the clergy for the beautiful ceremony and to the third class choir and their teachers for their input. The First Communion ceremonies will take place on Saturday 9 May. The children in the sixth classes will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in Raheen Church on Thursday 16 April and I would like to wish them and their teachers all the best for the day.

Seachtain na Gaeilge is in full swing and the children are being encouraged to take an active part in speaking Irish in all their activities. There will be a ‘Lá Glas’ or Green Day on Monday next 16 March and the children can wear ordinary clothes but with a Green theme. Go raibh maith agaibh to Mrs. Gleeson and her team for all their work on Seachtain na Gaeilge. If you would like to encourage your children to speak Irish informally at home, why not try a few simple phrases like ‘Dia Duit’ (Hello), ‘Conas atá tú?’ (How are you?), ‘Go raibh maith agat’ (Thank you) or ‘Slán’ (Goodbye). If you don’t feel confident enough don’t worry. Your child will be well able to give you a lesson!

Monday next also sees the Parents’ Association 5th and 6th class quiz. This is for teams of 4 and will take place in the Halla Mór starting at 6.00 pm. It will be great fun and you’d never know what capital city might be asked! (5th and 6th class children should know what this means!)

Finally the car park and the driving behaviour of a small minority are still causing serious concern both in the mornings and afternoons. Getting 715 children safely to and from school in a short space of time requires patience and consideration on everyone’s part. Please observe the car park safety rules; they are there to protect your child. Drive slowly, do not exit the car park at the entrance (drive slowly through to the exit), do not do a u-turn, do not park in the car park at opening and closing times (set down ONLY at those times) and please turn left on exiting.

Some dates for your diary:

Yours sincerely,

Colm Ward,

Principal.

20 January 2015

Dear Parents / Guardians,

A belated welcome back to all after the holidays! I would like to thank all parents for their understanding on our closure last week due to a Red Wind Alert from Met Éireann. Thankfully the promised storms did not materialise but I think it important to point out that the school takes such warnings very seriously especially after our experiences in last February’s storm. The text sent detailing the closure did not get through to some parents however so I would ask that you make sure that your contact details are up to date. If you did not receive a text message regarding the closure please check and see that we have the correct number for you. The closure was detailed also on our website www.stnessans.ie , on our Twitter account @MungretNS, on local radio and on the Live 95fm and Limerick Leader websites.

The school was involved in a programme called Food Dudes a number of years ago and I am pleased to let you know that we will be taking part again this year. Food Dudes is a programme aimed at encouraging children to eat more fruit and vegetables both in school and at home. It is designed to enable children to enjoy eating healthy diets and to create a healthy eating culture within schools and as such falls neatly into the school’s Healthy Eating Policy.

Children from Junior Infants to Second Class will be involved in a 16 day programme whereby prepared fruit and vegetables, stickers and rewards for every child will arrive at the school daily. Children from Third Class to Sixth Class will be provided with fruit and vegetables for four tasting days and will receive four rewards. The programme will begin at the end of February and when I have more definite dates I will let you know. If you would like more details you can visit the Food Dudes website at http://www.fooddudes.ie/main.html

Some dates for your diary:

Yours sincerely,

Christmas Letter Home

December 16, 2014

Dear Parents / Guardians,

As Christmas is nearly upon us I would like to look back over the first term and look forward to the New Year. It has been an eventful year with many sporting and cultural activities with some notable successes and many brave displays. I would like to thank all the boys and girls for their participation and all the staff for giving of their time freely for the good of the school community. Next term will see the start of hurling and camogie training, continued work by our Choirs including the Peace proms in February, development talks for the 5th and 6th classes and the 2nd classes will receive the Sacrament of First Penance.

The whole school community is looking forward to Christmas (counting the sleeps left!) and classes are busy with Christmas Art and Craft and singing Christmas Carols. Some classes will be taking to the stage to perform for the other classes and for their parents. It is a pleasure to see and experience the enthusiasm the children have and the happiness and joy in their faces!

I would like to thank you the parents for your continued interest in the education of your children. I would like to thank the very active and involved Parents’ Association for their continuing work on behalf of the children, parents and the school. The Family Walk took place on Sunday and the Association will be bag packing in Tesco on Thursday evening next 18 December. Other events are planned for the New Year and I look forward to working with the committee in 2015.

Welcome home to those family members who have travelled home to be with their families for Christmas. Please remember those who cannot be with their families to celebrate Christmas whether here in Ireland or abroad. As in other years, I would like to remember all those in the school community who have been bereaved over the past year. You and your loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

The school will close for holidays on Friday 19 December; Infant Classes will finish at 11.45 and all other classes will finish at 12.15. The school will reopen on Monday 5 January.

Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain fé mhaise daoibh go léir. Have a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.
