Recently,, the boys and girls did themselves proud! Despite playing against teams who were made up of children from 4th class and whose schools that have a long tradition of playing Olympic handball, our 3rd class showed incredible fighting spirit, skill and determination throughout their respective tournaments.
First up were the girls, playing matches against Trinity, Gardenfield and Belclare in their group and after some fantastic performances, the girls qualified but unfortunately lost out to a very strong Annagh team in the final game. The boys were equally as impressive and put in some incredible displays against Belclare, Trinity and a very experienced and skilled Gardenfield team. The boys were so unfortunate to lose out in the final game by a last minute goal.
I'm incredibly proud of the class with the way they conducted themselves throughout the day and are very much deserving of tonight's homework pass. I look forward to building on this and introducing the game to other classes within the school. It is my hope that we will be able to send more teams from the school to compete in these tournaments starting from next year.
In Term 2, third class began learning how to play the ukulele with Rory from Music Generation.
Together with fourth class, we had a gentle introduction to the game of chess recently. It is our hope to begin in class matches and competitions between the senior classes in Term 3.
We celebrated World Book Day with a visit to the local library and some guided reading with Senior Infants.
The children of Third Class participated in a in-class sports tournament over the last 2 weeks. The class was divided into 4 teams and competed against each other across 11 different sports including; soccer, box game, Olympic handball, capture the flag, football, uni hoc, basketball, relay races, tic tac toe, hoopla hoop game and a sports game.

Halloween fun in 3rd Class!
Great fun in 3rd Class playing Tic Tac Toe
3rd Class students are learning about global habitat destruction in Geography at the moment. We recently carried out an interesting science investigation covering ‘water pollution’. Different groups prepared experiments using either oil, soil/ plastic or washing up liquid acting as a pollutant. The children were very engaged when discovering the effects different pollutants have on water and how this then can danger sea creatures and their habitats. We also discussed ways in which we can prevent this issue and possible solutions WE can do.
Since mid-October 3rd class have been running laps and laps around the playground of our school. This is part of our Run Around Europe Challenge!
First of all we began with the Run Around Ireland Challenge. We did this as part of Active School’s Week. We aimed to run the distance to all of the famous landmarks around Ireland. These included the Giant’s Causeway and the Cliffs of Moher. Overall we ran over 400km for that challenge. However, that was not enough running for our class.
Next we decided to take on another challenge! We set off to conquer the Run Around Europe Challenge. The aim is to run the distance from Ireland to the capital of every country in Europe. By December we had made it to a number of destinations, including London, Paris and Brussels!
Since the New Year we have made even more progress. We have ran over 3,000km and ‘visited’ over 30 European countries. One of the most recent capitals we have reached is Skopja, Macedonia, which is 3140km away!
All of us here in Rang a Trí are very proud of our achievement so far. We all feel the challenge has made us fitter and healthier. Our goal is to complete the full challenge by the end of Spring. Once completed, our class will have ran a combined 6,000km Around our school yard!

Great excitement in Third Class today ahead of the Late Late Toy Show tonight! We each designed jumpers that we reckon Mr. Ryan Tubridy should sport during the show. The RTÉ stylist better watch out!
We have been busy in Rang a Trì learning all about Climate Change! We held our very own COP26 meeting between the 26 third class pupils and some very interesting points were made!
Today we all dressed up on our maroon and white to show support for our special guest, Galway senior football captain, Shane Walsh! We were delighted to get the chance to talk to Shane and to ask him questions about keeping active, playing sport and eating well. Thanks to Shane for giving us all valuable advice on how to keep healthy and active!
Some fabulous costumes in 3rd Class before the mid-term!
Our overall theme for October was 'Buildings'. Third class students took a virtual 'walk' around Dunmore to study the buildings in our town. We learned how to construct a house and all the workers and materials involved! We used what we learned about lines and angles in maths to create lovely 'City-View' drawings. Lastly, we ended the term with constructing spooky haunted houses!
As part of our 'Buildings' theme, students were given the challenge of constructing the tallest tower possible using only 15 pipe-cleaners!
We were busy learning all about the Stone Age in 3rd class during the month of October!
The class created fabulous silhouette art pieces of Stonehenge during both the Winter and Summer Solstice!
